“Sri” in the Sri Vaishnava tradition is the Goddess Mahalakshmi. Sri & Vaishnava – Vishnu and Lakshmi – together are the goal meant to be attained by the devotees of this tradition. Sri Mahalakshmi is both upayam, and upeyam (the means, and the goal). She intercedes on the behalf of the errant jivatmas (purushaakaaram) to the Supreme Lord, and bestows eternal service to the divine couple (nitya kainkaryam) which is the final goal that all jivatmas attain upon complete surrender.

The following are verses of the Sri Mahalakshmi Ashtakam which was composed by Lord Indra. This prayer has be popularly rendered by many singers in the past. Read on, and you may be surprized by how familiar the words of this prayer seem!
